When in doubt, just roll

At the job last night our bassist takes a solo while the guitarist and I are keeping time. Guy comes out of it and decides he'd like to put 1 in a different spot than where the rest of us had it at (yeah, sweet)....Guitarist (really insecure player) freaks and there we had the making of a wonderful Amtrak disaster. I swear, I just start a double stroke roll on the snare - took my feet off the pedals, just played the snare. Everyone found one again and we were off.

Think I heard that nugget of wisdom from Roy Burns or some older player years ago. It's still good advise. How do you guys recover? - Shy of calling the idiot an a**hole on stage? 8)

Most of the time, everybody's together except the one guy who blows it. In those cases, I make sure everybody sticks to the arrangement that was rehearsed, and the odd-man has to catch up to the rest of us.

I'll generally just change the beat up until we all hit one again.
Exactly what I do. Huh Garrett, not bad for a kid! :p :D :p
Like I've said before, chronological age means nothing to me. It's years on the instrument. ;)

Believe me, I was poking fun at age, NOT ability. From what I've read you know alot more than I do, and thats not sarcastic.

Thank you very much.

I know you were calling me the kid, I just know that some of youngsters around here have that chip on their shoulder. :)

Alright, my curiousity is sufficiently piqued: How old do you be? Reading your posts, I wouldn't have guessed you under 21 - any answer you give will be a compliment to your ability vs. calender age argument.

I'm 30 and I've been playing since 11. And I still have a long way to go with my playing.

Yeah, I was asking Sgarret - not sure why if he's 30 he is getting the kid label.

Bong: Was up in your neck of woods last summer - great drum shop in a strip mall in South Portland - can't remember the name of it - my cousins are in Topsham and So. Freeport - also saw a great group (think out of Boston) who were doing a outdoor concert in one of the squares in downtown Portland - pretty area. Anyway, cheers.

Glad you liked it up here, it is nice. The joke with SGarrett started with a couple of comments in the "first concert" thread. I was razzing him cause he seemed older than me in some of the comments that he made, but come to find out he's not. Just kidding around.

Most of my friends have always been older than me. So I kinda get that older than my years thing at times. It's a good balance for how much of a freaking goof ball I can be. Maybe it's the musician thing, but I'm immature as hell a good 50% of the time. "Heh-heh-heh, that says 'wood'" or I'll see the acronym for Point Of Sales at a cash wrap and chuckle to myself. Ok, maybe I just watched WAY too much Beavis and Butt-Head. :D

Ok guys, thanks for the explanations. Oh, and Garett: You'll never be finshed trying to "get it right." At 45, I'm still at it - haven't got there yet and I started at 6. Wonderful life ain't it!!! 8) Still, a bad day on the kit is better than the many possible lists of other sh*t we could be doing instead, so I just keep it in perspective.

45, YOU OLD F**K!!!!!!! Nah, just adding to the joke, I never know when to stop. Serious though, I nod to all drummers younger or older. I can learn something from everybody.

21 but i've been drumming for 14 years.
And if someone ever gets off beat which does happen. I just hit the snare and start my own tempo. Usuauly everyone catches on. lol once this guy didn't. So eventually the people just booed him off stage. He was really really bad. So much for being a guest drummer for open mic.
