What is a good drummer??

There are many posts on here dealing with someone's favorite drummer, and drummers that people respect and admire because they are very creative and do things that many other drummers don't think of. I am a person who enjoys these drummers as well, made obvious by my numerous posts on here about my favorite drummers. But one thing that I have come to respect a great deal is a drummer who writes parts that really fit with the rest of the song.

Many drummers I was initially in aw of because of the crazy things they wrote, but once I got past the initial shock of their physical talent, I became disappointed because their music might not fit the song all that well, or everything they do ends up being the same in most songs. Then there are some other drummers who I never would have thought twice about because their beats are not innovative or challenging, but their drumming is perfect for the style of the band, and really brings the whole composition of the music together. I have begun to pay attention to the subtleties of these drummers and what they do in the writing of their material that makes their parts work so well, and I have developed a new respect for many drummers.

I'm simply writing this to get some feed back from people on drummers that you think fit this kind of profile. Drummers I think fit this profile are Vesa Ranta (former drummer of Sentenced), Lars Ulrich (Metallica, the earlier stuff), & Steve Wacholz (Ex-Savatage drummer).

Also general thoughts on what makes a good drummer (as the title proposes).

To me, a good drummer is someone who enjoys both playing and improving their playing, regardless of genre.

My personal playing preference tends towards guys who play appropriate parts with feeling...in other words, guys who can groove a less is more beat. You have drummers and you have musicians. The former plays drums in a musical setting and the latter plays music through the drums.

Well said, especially that last part (Drummer v. Musician). I think the appropriate parts with feeling is an important point. I have been drumming for just under 2 years, and have been trying to figure out distinctions like this in drummers that I admire, and using those distinctions to critique my own writing/playing.

a good drummer to me is someone who can drive the hell out of a band. a great drummer to me is someone who can drive the hell out of a band while presenting an individual artistic point of view.

I'd also like to throw in there that I think a truely good drummer is not only talented at their craft but extremely tasteful as well. The original drummer for Coheed and Cambria I think fits this profile well.

Last time I checked you played the harp. You fail at drums. Go play your harp fairy boy

And yes Possum stick tricks are epic, so are blastbeats. I got the joke, don't worry
