The best thing to do is to just do it. That is how I learned. Just do it. Be patient, try a bunch of different things. Common mistakes for young drummers is putting too much tension on everything. The only head that should be tight at all is the top snare head. Even with the top snare head, you should not make it really tight, just tight enough to get a nice crack. Keep all your other heads pretty loose and find what works for you. Try not to use any external muffling except for maybe a small piece of tape on the edge of the snare. Remo Pinstripe heads on the toms are great for drummers who are learning to tune.
