Theres John Bonham's drum tech explaining how he tuned the kit, what heads he used, and the intonation.

Enjoy.

His live sound in action. Amazing.

His tuning (And probably the most popular sound) is where you would tune the resonant (Bottom) head slightly tighter than the top head. This will give you the "bong" sound.

The best way to tune your kit (IMO) is to take each drum off the mount and place it on a carpeted floor. This way you can isolate each side.

On a new head, you'll then begin tightening as if you were tightening lugs on a car tire. You tune the drum up equally, occasionally pushing the heel of your hand in the center of the drum head to make sure it seats well.

Overtighten the head slightly, then begin bringing the tuning down to where you want it. tap your drum stick around the edge of the drum near each lug you are loosening/tightening. Always do the lug on the opposite side, then move to the one on the side... then go opposite of that... and so on.

Turn the drum over and do the same.

As far as a snare drum head, I like to tune the top head tighter than the bottom head slightly, and make sure I leave the snares loose enough so that I can make them sing with ghost notes, but tight enough they dont buzz when you want a back beat.

A lot of guys will tune to certain tunings... I'm more of just making sure my drums sound right for the band I'm playing with. When I put the toms back on their mounts... I'll go from the bottom tom up to the second biggest tom in a "Here comes the bride" fashion. I'll listen to the tones so that the "here comes the bride" is in tune.

Then I'll move to the next biggest drum and continue with this method.

Hope that helps.
