split snare

I'm in the process of making a split snare. I had a clean mahogany shell (14"x6.5") laying around from my gretsch catalina kit. (didn't like the sound of the snare), so I cut it in half:D I've ordered black tube lugs, as well as a black trick throwoff, and here's how the shell looks at the moment. or should I say shells?

as you can see, the black top half needs a sanding and another clear coat (maybe 2), and then it'll look the same as the black stripe on the bottom half.

I know the bottom part of the black stripe is messy, but I figured the head's gonna cover that up.
when I'm done with the paint work, I'm gonna properly sand the edges I've cut, so they'll be nice and smooth and you won't see the bleed through:D
More pictures when I'm done!

if anyone has suggestions, please let em rip!

I had a lot of fun "building" this snare, and I've learned a lot from it. I think it came out pretty sweet being that it was my first time cutting and painting and all that. Obviously there are a lot of things I need to learn how to do properly, so hopefully future projects will be even more succesful:D

Oh, did I say it sounds AWESOME?

No suggestions, just the statement that you have bigger balls than I do. I just couldn't cut one of my snares, I admire you for doing so.

you could if you'd heard the thing as it was:p

naah, it wasn't that bad, but I really never used it, as I actually have 3 snares that I like much better. I figured I could only gain from it. If only experience in cutting and painting.

cheers dude, I've just put on the last coats, and I hope to receive the lugs and throwoff within a weeks time, and I'll have it assembled in a few minutes, and then I'll post pics!

That looks very clean man, can't wait to see the finished product. Just out of curiousity, if you don't mind sharing. What kind of paint and clear coat are you using?

I used just regular black spraypaint (2 layers) I got from the market for like €4. The clear coat (4 layers) I got from my local hardware store, high gloss veneer, I think most people use it for furniture.

I think you can use whatever kind of spraypaint that's high gloss if you know how to use it, and sand it between coats and all..

almost there! I got the lugs in the mail today (black tube lugs) and I just finished putting them on.. it looks totally awesome. I had black hoops lying around still, so I slammed those on with a set of new heads, and it's beautiful man.

Now I just have to wait for the black Trick throwoff and I'm all set!

unfortunately I don't have a camera at the moment, but I'll make sure to fix something when it's finished.
