I'm sure there would likely be a topic on Premier XPKs (there must be more than one kit!!!)

Anyway...here's mine...and I hope in time fellow XPK owners would join in.

I bet in time these pictures won't show up anymore (yep...exceeded bandwidth).

(These Were Taken during December 3rd)

And the details (the hats and Hi-hat Stand in the Picture isn't mine):
1. Premier XPK Birch/Eucalyptus lacquered shells - 10", 12" & 14"
toms and 20" kick
2. 3.5"x14" Piccolo Snare (Keller 10-Ply Maple Shell With Ludwig Hardware)
3. 9" Paiste Signature Splash
3. 16" Sabian HHX Evolution Crash
4. 10" Istanbul Agop/Mehmet Splash
5. 15" K Zildjian Dark Crash - Thin
7. 18" Istanbul Agop Traditional Dark Crash
6. 14" Istanbul Mehmet Traditional Thin Crash
8. 14" AA El Sabor Hats (not mine)
9. Hardware - mixture of Verve, Premier, Tama, and Yamaha, And Pearl (not mine again!)
10. Tom Mounts - Premier Tom Mounts (The stock Premier Tom mount is sitting in storage)

* Heads on batters are Evans G2 clear heads, Kick has a EMAD batter and a Powerstroke 3 Ebony Resonant with a 6" hole off center. Snare has a coated ambassador batter and clear
resonant snare side.

and more pictures just for kicks...hehehe.

YES...YES...I admit it!! I'm a closet photographer.

but..no...aside from the kit the rest is NOT mine. Guitars and the Percussion Set-up belong to the other musicians I shared the stage with last December 3rd.

** some stuff that have not been included in the pics:
1. Tama 5.5x14 Snare - Steel outershell and 4 ply birch interior.
3. 12" Zildjian K Splash (Yes! I finally have it back!)
4. 13" Istanbul Agop Empire Hi-Hats
5. 15" Tosco China (with 3 rivets) - Maybe next Carols I'll whip it out.
6. Stock Premier Hi-Hat Stand
7. Eliminator Single Pedal (has yet to be broken in!)
8. Tama Iron Cobra (Double Pedal Version) - for practice only! hahahaha

I'm diggin' that finish? I'd love to hear those birch/eucalyptus shells.

PS - are they black-lacquered from the inside?

They have a black coating on the inside, though I couldn't call the finish lacquer. :)

If memory serves me correctly, someone mentioned that the difference between the Premier APKs and the Premier XPKs would be the black finish on the inside of the shells.

Unfortunately I don't have any top-notch quality of the recording of the XPKs. But a while back I doodled with my laptop and the microphone from a headset...saved a few tracks from that...on request from someone who was interested in how my Istanbuls sounded. You can find them streaming as Tracks 3 and 4 on my myspace page:

** Just Track 3 has the XPK. Track 4 is just the Istanbuls

It just occurred to me that tracks 1 and 2 still used the XPK. But I think I was using the chunky-strainer-problem TAMA snare. This was recorded the day I got the kit...so the heads on there were pinstripes and I just strapped on a cloth and some tape on the kick batter head to cover up the click pad that came with it.

14" El Sabor Hats, 16" HHX Evolution Crash...(I think that's it!)

Well...hopefully you're in the area (Sydney Southwest) this December 2007, because it would be likely that I would be using the kit during Christmas Carols night. 8) Heh...I know your far away (Poland right?)...but I just thought I'd mention it. Just in case. :)

That's a nice recording you got there :) I bet they sound even sweeter in person :)

Haha, yeah, Poland's quite far away from Australia :) On the other hand I'd love to visit Sydney, so who knows ;) cheers!

I'm pretty sure that my kit is an XPK, but i don't really know the difference between XPK and APK, plus there's nothing on the drums that say what series it is. The lugs on my kit are different than the ones on yours, and the inside of the shells are not black, but either way the kit sounds great and I love it! Anyways here are a few pictures of my kit.

Drums: 10", 12", and 14" toms, 22"x16" Bass, 14"x5.5" Snare, and an 8" roto tom
Cymbals: all Sabian
- 14" AAX Stage Hats
- 18" AAX Metal Crash
- 10" B8 Pro China Splash
- 16" B8 Thin Crash
- 22" Pro Rock Ride
- 18" AA Metal X China
Hardware: Stands are Pearl BC-2000's and B-1000's, Iron Cobra Hi-Hat stand, and Iron Cobra Double Kick

If anyone knows whether it's an XPK or an APK, it would be much appreciated

McSleeps,

Thanks for posting your kit! :D

There was a write-up somewhere that the difference between the XPKs and the APKs would be the black coating on the inner surface of the shell.

Loop asked me if it was lacquer on my XPKs...but unfortunately...I couldn't say so...it could be lacquer (just one coat maybe)...or maybe I got the earlier/latter series of XPKs that wasn't coated with lacquer.

Yeah, it looks like an XPK all right. I think they only did the APK in solid colours. I have an XPK in the Topaz finish, the same finish as Leigh's. However, it has the same lugs as yours, and the inside of the shells are also not black. Mine is an earlier version of the XPK than Leigh's, they changed the design not long after I got mine, so I'm glad I got it when I did.

I purchased my kit in 1998, if anyone's curious to know when these versions were about.

Hey everyone, I'm new to this drum forum caper.

I have a royale kit (with black insides), I heard that the Royale was the top line kit in the late 70's and early 80's until it was replaced with the APK and XPK range - does anyone know anything more about this subject?

My kit is 7 piece and I don't have any photo's of the full kit yet but there are some photo's of it as a 3 and 5 piece set up here:

Let me know what you think?

Heya tuffbreaks,

When you purchased your kit back in 1998 did it come with everything? [i.e. the hardware (even hats and the bass drum pedal..and a throne).] I guess I was blessed to have gotten my XPK in that condition (It was from someone who had it in his garage and had switched to an electronic kit).

Also...any chance you can share pics of your XPK? (Plus Set-up details when you do lug it along to gigs...would be great!)

The Curious One,
Leigh

Some info for you guys...

The APK range started life in 1985 as the Royale APK, the Royale range was introduced in 1983 to replace the Premier Club series, which itself had replaced the Olympic line that had been around since 1937. APK was the acronym for 'Advanced Power Kit', offering drummers on a budget the chance to own a kit in 'power' sizes.

By 1987 the Royale range had been reduced a single headed beginner kit and both APK and Royale were sporting the single tension 'speedboat hull' lugs. By 1989, the XPK range was introduced and the Royale disappeared and both A and XPK now having Premier's classic hi-ten single braced lugs.

The difference between A and X is A are wrapped and X are lacquered, otherwise they are the same. The wood used over the years has changed, originally made from luan then with a birch veneer over merranti and by 1997, they were a birch/eucalyptus/birch 'sandwich', they also were fitted with the small 'mini-mass' lugs at this time. The APK line was discontinued a few years later, replaced by the Cabria range and XPK followed shortly after.

Recently Premier has reintroduced the range with the Cabria XPK, Cabria APK and Cabria PK series.
