Pearl Piccolos

Does anyone have any experience with Pearl Steel or Maple piccolos? I want to get a piccolo snare badly, but I haven't ever seen one in stores so I don't know how they sound. The most experience I have is watching a video of a pro who uses it.

So are they any good?

there's a 13" steel piccolo (the firecracker I believe) that Ive been interested in for awhile. It barks real loud, got some nice crack with that defining piccolo "ppiinnggg"

I never played a maple piccolo (except for a $700 custom that sounded SEX)

I have Brass FFS Piccolo and it is excellent!

I had a 3x13 maple shell Pearl pic for a long time. Sold it about a year or so ago. It was okay, but at the time I hadn't used it in years.

Those Pearl free floaters are MUCH nicer than the pic I had. Then again, pay for what you get.

I bought a used steel 14 X 3.5 FFS steel Pearl Piccolo for $130 Canadian, replaced the top & bottom heads (emperor on top) and cleaned it up to where it was as good as new. I liked it at first, but I find it's a one trick pony and only good for certain musical situations. Maybe I need to change the Emperor for an Ambassador or a Vintage A...

I also have an Akira Jimbo 13 X 7 (that I won) that I much prefer as it has the cut but also the body to go with it. It's also a much higher quality drum, so comparing the two isn't totally fair.

The FFS is the snare I use the least out of my 5 snares which also includes a 10 X 5 Maple(?) Pacific 805, a Ludwig LM-400 & a Tama maple Starclassic 14 X 5.5. For the money, I don't regret buying it and I'd bet that the brass & maple FFS piccolos sound significantly better... Maybe I shouldn't have jumped on the one I bought and spent a little more on a piccolo I was more inclined to be happy with... it's like they say, buy cheap & buy twice...

Cheers

I used to have a Pearl Maple Piccolo, one of the first snares I bought cause it was so cheap. It was nice, but if you play alot of loud music I wouldn't suggest it. Go for a 13x6-7 anything over the 13x3, IMO
