as of yet...I've never opened up for any national acts. But coming in October will be my first, opening up for Krisiun, Decapitated, and Abysmal Dawn.

wow some of you guys have scored some pretty big gigs, how do bands actually choose opening acts, or do they not have any say in it?

curious because when I saw the who last summer there opening act SUCKED and we booed them off stage. ive never liked booing bands but they actually sucked and were really offensive and obnoxious.

The headliner can pick who opens. If they don't have a preference, they leave it up to the venue to find openers. Usually a local band that has a good draw.

In the late 80's and I was 18ish, we opened up for:

Anthrax
Dark Angel
Death Angel
Kreator
SOD
Fates Warning (twice)
Phantasm
King Diamond
Mercyful Fate
Bloodlust
JFA
TSOL

Also, 5 years ago opened up for a few of the Beach Boys guys and the Safaris.....then I got invited up on stage to play "Wipe Out" with them.......those of you that don’t know, the Safari's wrote “Wipe Out” originally. That was by far the coolest thing that I have done on stage in front of almost 10,000 people.

Timekeep69 and azdrummer, I officially worship you.

King Diamond?
Anthrax?
Kreator?
Deicide?
Nuclear Assault?

I'd kill my family to open for those bands back in the day!

Gene Hoglan was awesome in Death too (along with Chuck Schuldiner) and Death Angel is murderously good. Damnit, that's so cool. I hope that happens to me :p

LOL.....I had a blast back in the day. We were a thrash band that was managed by Gloria Cavalera (Max from Soulfly's wife)....well, she wasnt at the time but is now. Anyway, she scored us a lot of those gigs and a deal w/Metal Blade records but the band broke up before we recorded....STUPID ASSSSSSSSSSS! We also had a song on Metal Massacre 9 (song 1 side 2....yes, it was an album - LOL! The song is called "The Definitive Apology". COOL STUFF!

All of the guys from every band we played with were cool as fuck. But the coolest one by far was Gene Hoglan of Dark Angel. COOL ASS DUDE! He would get his legs stronger/faster by wearing 15 pound weights around his ankles when he would play.

I was 17-19 when all of that shit was going on. It was a trip.
Metal Blade records re-released #9 in a compilation with #8 and we didnt make is the re-issue. You can still find them if you look.

I forgot to put Nuclear Asssult, Exodus, Zno-White, Sacred Reich, Flotsam & Jetsam and Hirax on the list.

Thanks...Tim

Well.....good luck Alcyon. Stick with it and practice, practice, practice as much as you can. Also, if you find guys that you get along with....thats more than half the battle. We always thought there was someone better out there.....and it cost us a deal and i'm sure tons of other cool shit. We had Jason & Lars helping promote the band. And a few of the guys just couldnt get along.

JACKASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Anyway, goodluck!
BTW - Not to preach but, stay off the drugs.....they always mess things up.

Drugs, been there done that, waste of time.

My band, Black Tusk, is actually working out pretty well, at least the guitarist and singer and I are solid, but our bass player is kind of intermittent despite how good he is at playing. We need a more reliable guy.

JASON AND LARS?

*mutter mutter grumble*
