ok i just thought of this, and have no thought to it, but could you use your high hat parts for crashes? sorry if it seems stupid but just thought it was interesting

you mean like using the individual hats as crashes? you can. i used an old planet z top hihat as a 14" crash for a while because it sounded decent there...well, at the time i thought it did. thinner hihats will work better.

i tried it with my A custom hi hats..but then I put them back on my hi hat because I thought they would break if i crashed em. I think theyre made slightly different than crashes.

It depends. You'll probably find some cheap hi-hats that are good substitutes for cheap crashes.

For the most part though, hats make better overly-pingy rides than crashes.

Yes, they are made slightly different than crashes. Hats generally have a slightly flatter profile and smaller bell. While this is generally a characteristic of a "fast" crash, hats are usually much more heavy than a fast crash of the same diameter.

For instance, using Paiste as an example, a 16" Signature Full crash is usually around 1000 grams, where as the top hat of a set of Sig medium hats is about the same weight, but 2 inches shorter in diameter (the bottom hats are usually heavier and can weigh anywhere from 1100 to 1200 grams).

Ultimately the sound characteristics of the 2 types of cymbals will be different. This doesn't necessarily mean you can't or shouldn't use a hat as a crash, but the desired effect will depend a lot on your technique and the context of the song it is being used in.

i used an old zbt pro hihat top as a china i step(well ok more like jumped) on both sides caused it to invert and then put it on a stand
it made one loud ping china sound that came in real handy when i needed and accent that no other cymbal could give me

sadly it cracked. ive been meaning to create a new one of these but dotn really have a hat to do so with.

but if you flipped this thread i took 2 14in a series crashs and made them hats, gave a nice chick and very loud but
it exactly a desierable sound.

My Paiste 802 bottom hat is LOUD AS HELL! One day i just held up it and tapped and BAM! like a sonic explosion! I've haven't tried it as a crash though....If you crashed it you'd probably bust windows and eardrums.

got that same problem. tho if you use it like a tiny ride it has a lil ping that beats any ride

but i agree, if you have a thin one, try it.

The first two drummers of the band "Victim's Family" were both minimalists
Tim Solyan used a crash and a pair of ZMAC marching cymbals as hats
Devon used just a pair of hats
Both used the hats spaced quite far apart from each other
They used hi hats the normal way but also crashed them and used the bell for riding

I've got a pair of old Krut hats that make some pretty killer dirty sounding crashes...they're really thin, and a little bent in places. They're only there for effects though.
