I've always thought he was a good pocket playing drummer. I'm curious though to see what Taylor Hawkins is going to do for the next album. Also curious as to what kind of crash or ride he's using on the left hand side of his kit since Wikipedia doesn't acknowledge it.

Did Taylor leave The Foos?

I don't think so, I just read that this is going to be the only album that he appears on.

actually, eppard left or got fired, i dont know, and their new drummer chris pennie was still under contract with the dillinger escape pllan, so taylor hawkins stepped in to track the drums for their new album. it was in the latest DRUM! magazine.

I think I can shed some light on this thread! woohoo!

Eppard, along with coheed's bassist Mic Todd were into drugs and/or alcohol and weren't able to keep going. Both of them left but Mic was able to clean himself up and rejoin the band... I'm really not sure what Eppard is up to at this point so I won't speculate.

As Drumosaurus said, Pennie couldn't play on the new album so Taylor Hawkins stepped in. I thought this was a pretty crazy combo but I love Coheed and Taylor Hawkins so it definitely works out in my favour! While Hawkins recorded the drum tracks on the album Pennie actually wrote most of them.

I've seen Coheed live 3 times. Twice with Eppard on the cans and once with Pennie. I've gotta say... Chris Pennie may be the more technically skilled drummer but he just doesn't fit with Coheed as well as Eppard did. As of yet Pennie's parts just lacked that signature feel that Eppard seemed to latch onto. I thought maybe this was because Pennie wasn't able to record with the band but after hearing him live I was even more unimpressed.

Therefore... In my very humble opinion Eppard > Pennie as the drummer for CoCa. :D
