Gongs

I’ve been using my 18” china as a gong substitute with mallets, but now I’ve been thinking about having a real one. I know they are cumbersome (and expensive), but it would be mainly for studio purposes.

Which are the sonic differences between wind gongs and “chaw” gongs? Any ideas (style, size) on a good & versatile gong? I feel inclined toward bright sounding / shimmery gongs (if it helps).

I've wanted a gong for so long now. i would have so many uses for it...let's face it...gongs have a certain amount of oooo aaahh factor to them live also. gongs just plain look and sound cool live. just so damn expensive.

I've been wanting a gong for a long time now. Problem is...all my cymbals are Paiste, and I'd kinda like to keep it that way....and Paiste gongs are not cheap.

The actual one in the link below was on E-Bay about 4 months ago. I was willing to bid up to $1,200-$1,300, and thought I had a good chance of getting it, but it went for about $1,700 in the end. Amazing sounding gong though.

my ex got me a gong for one of my birthday's a while back. it is a very cool piece of hardware, it is a sabian and i think it is quite cool. and they always come in handy when you need a gong sound. i also have 16 and 18" wuhans in the cymbal coffin as well...

now bare in mind that i only sent you this link based on my personal opinion , simply cuz i think its the best gong sound ever .
Thanks! It sounds quite similar to a wind gong. I'm more into the chao gong kind of sound. I liked the fuyin (tiger) from the Zildjian.

I've been thinking about a 18" - 24" Wuhan chao gong... or those sold by Mid East Mfg. Anyone experienced with those?
