Can anybody understand how he's applying rudiments to this?

Watch this Jimmy Degrasso video. Forgive me but I don't quite understand how he's applying rudiments, or how to identify where it is that he is playing rudiments. It just sounds like chops to me. He plays something and says "That's a so and so rudiment" but I don't understand it. I want to know how to apply rudiments to my playing and learn some of the things that he's doing in this video. An example would help. Maybe I don't understand it because I never really learned rudiments and I have no idea what he's talking about. Anyway, here's the video.

It's difficult to know what he's talking about if you haven't learned rudiments. I suggest that you first find a friend or teacher to work through all the rudiments. Once you're familiar in using rudiments, in their basic form, then you'll have a better grasp applying them to the drumset.

Yeah it's pretty hard to see where he's applying the rudiments if you don't even know what the rudiments are so I suggest you to start learning the basic rudiments, it'll make it a lot easier to understand.

He's playing them so fast it's hard to see what he's doing, plus he's playing the rudiments and breaking them up with the bass drum and toms. Check out the book Drumset Rudiments by Pete Magadini, it has the basic snare rudiments then they're applied to the drumset. Degrasso is doing that but way fast.

Ahh, that's what I thought, but wasn't sure, breaking up rudiments in between toms and kicks.

I have somewhat of a handle on rudiments, I know some names of different rudiments but can't identify em when they're played, ya know.

I'll check out that book and I'll look up the basic rudiments and work on em. I think I saw em once on Vic Firth's website.

I think I've got a little better handle on what Degrasso is doing now.

Thanks guys!

You're welcome! I have used the Magadini book for a few years and once you learn the rudiments applied to the drumset, especially the paradiddle, it gives you some very nice cool sounding fill chops.

Here's an amazon.com link to the book:
