Anyone make their own drumsticks?

Today I finish making my own drumsticks. They were the second pair I made. I made them out of African Poduke (I think thats how you spell it). The first pair out of ash. Not the strongest wood, but looks really nice. Just wondering if anyone else has done it before? I made them on a lathe, if anyone is wondering.

In my first semester of college, I made sticks out of dowels that you can buy from a craft store. First, I picked dowels that were as straight as possible. Then I cut out segments that were about 17 inches long. Then I cut some off of one to match the pitch. Then I just sanded the blunt edges a bit. There was no taper or ball at the tip, and they played great.
