Destined for fame and fortune or for pain and problems?

Last night I saw a classic case of the hunched over, vice gripped, chicken winged, painful to watch drummer. And he actually had a lot of talent! He was about 16, playing open handed, fast and hard but his posture and his technique really let him down. By the end of their set he was flagging and...

    Pedal Positioning...

I'm just wondering what kind of angle you guys have your feet at? I've seen set ups with the pedals nearly parallel to each other, some set ups with the pedals pointing outwards almost at a 90" angle between them. I've found for me the best is a half way point, where my foot kind of sits with...

After a fantastic weekend, I went and did an mmmdrums!

So I went to Drumfest this weekend and saw some great players including Thomas Lang and Terry Bozzio. Both of whom I got to chat with. Terry, myself and my friend spent over an hour talking about drumming being so much more than just part of music. About rhythm being deep rooted in all things as...

    My new Medicine Man Snare.

At DRT I took delivery of my beautiful MM snare, the snare that NightCrawler Steve actually picked as his in the snare drum olympics because it sounded nicer than his did ;-) It's Maple, 13 inches by 7. The finish is Emerald green and the grain obviously still shows. I wanted something...

After the weekend my set up HAD to change...

So I went to study with Dom after the DRT and we really started to look at open handed playing. So armed with the new open handed book by Claus Hessler and Dom, when I got back home things needed to be changed. Although I've been working in open handed gradually as my kit was, I'd not thrown...

    Ahhh good times...

Just found an old pic that I thought I'd lost. It's from about 4 years ago, when I still had my Premier Artist Birch Heritage jazz 18" setup. Man I wish I'd kept that kit. It was small, light and great fun to play. The ride cymbal was mounted off of the bass drum. I also lost the Velvet...

So here's the deal, a friend of mine is a sound engineer and just out of uni. He's had access to top studios there and has had some great success already getting airplay with some of the bands he's produced. He's moved into our band studio adding his equipment to ours, but the one thing he...

    Just had a call..

about a charity gig I'm playing with some friends of mine. The music is mainly jazz and musical fare and I'm really looking forward to it, even though I'm only playing a handful of the songs. There's another guy who's the mian drummer for the band who's playing the rest. Apparently I'm doing the...

    When you practice,

Do you muliti task by doing something else as well? For example when working on technique such as Moeller or Freestrokes, I tend to watch the news channels and anything else worthwhile on TV. I know Bill has said in the past he works one hand and plays solitaire on his iPod! :-P

    Heavy night....

My friend has just become single again so suddenly wants to go out drinking. I wasn't all that up for it but ended up going out last night and met a nice girl. We ended up chatting on her doorstep until 4.30am. So I get to bed around 5. I started work at 10am and I woke up at 9.52. Somehow I...

    Your favourite roll.

Just wondering what your fave is, can be open, closed, jazz, metal, whatever. For me the best roll of all time is by Steve Gadd playing "Keep the Customeer Satisfied" at the Buddy Rich memorial concert. Technically it's two rolls at 1.10 and 1.26. <object width="425" height="355"><param...
