I played a gig the other day and my cymbals seemed really tinny in the recording, like they don't stand out enough from the massive distortion coming out of my guitarist's Marshall. So, I'm looking for some mega-loud crashes. I play Zildjian ZXTs and they just can't cut it imo.

The ones I was looking at are:
-Sabian AXXplosion Crashes
-Sabian AA Metal-X Crashes
-Zildjian Z Custom Crashes
-Zildjian Z Custom Projection Crashes
-Paiste Rude Crashes (all I could see there was Medium Thins, is that the only Rude Crash?)

Now, both kinds of Sabians and the Z Custom non-projection crashes come in cymbal packs with 16" and 18" cymbals, so those are pretty good deals, but would those sizes work as paired cymbals? What are good paired sizes?

Anyone played any of these cymbals, and did you like them? What are the good sizes in the series?

Thanks a lot, all.

Z Custom Projection is definately louder than the Z Custom, hence "Projection"

z customs are insanely loud but sound like trashcan lids. my vote is for the aaxplosions or the rudes. both of them are med. thin cymbals but youd never know it. if you want them louder, get bigger sizes like a 17/19 or an 18/20 setup.

I tried playing some Z Customs today and they seem almost TOO heavy... I really have to thrash them to get them to report as crashes and it's hard work.

So I talked to my drum teacher and did some research and I think I'm going to go with a 17" and a 19" Sabian AAXplosion. They're relatively cheap, apparently very tough and loud. Sound like a good plan? Would a 16" and 18" be a better combo?

great choice. i have the 14" and 18" aaxplosions and they sound amazing. if you want a ton of volume, get the 17 and 19. i dont own either but i played a 19 at guitar center a while back and had to work not to make it too loud.

the aaxplosions start out as very bright, rough crashes when you get them but after a few good weeks of playing they really mellow out and become slightly darker and much smoother sounding and they are a real beauty to play. i just tell you this so that you know what to expect. the sound you buy wont be the sound that you keep in the end...it gets even better with time.

Can't go wrong with Sabian. The AAXplosions are where my money is at.

I voted for the AAXplosions... because as cool as I think the Paiste RUDES are, I have only heard them on Iron Maiden songs... and maybe some other recordings. But I gotta say... Sabian Vaults, are DAMN LOUD crashes too!!!
I proudly play with Tama (snare drums), PDP, Sabian, LP, Paiste, Vic Firth, Aquarian (bass and snare heads), and Remo (tom heads)brands! My biggest drummer influences are Mic Fleetwood, Nicko McBrain, and Mike Portnoy.
