i think its all pretty funny! and to be honest i think its sometimes better drummers dont get as much praise. the last thing i would want is to have a big ego, and because guitarists get all the attention they get the ego, then end up looking like self obsessed twats! when it comes to drummer jokes, just laugh along, they can be pretty funny, and there is no need to take offence... you know your doing a good job! and we all know that guitarists have no timing! just remeber: how many guitarists does it take to change a lightbulb? 10, one to do it, then the other 9 to try and do it faster!

a jokes a joke, they should never be taken seriously.
all the drum jokes u hear can be pretty funny, but then again theres jokes about all musicians and their instruments, its just harmless comedy, dont take things to seriously, only when their used ALL the time, they can get annoying

you know this is a very touchy topic with some people. in the mere 2 years i have been playin i have constantly been told that i am "just the drummer" and that the guitarist has the hardpart. YES guitar is a hard instrument to play, but do you use both hands and feet to play it? NO the drums take your entire body and mind to work. you need to coordinate every limb to play a certain poly rhythm or triplet beat, or off time beat.

the problem is that the music that is out today is all the same. the "hit" bands. sound the smae with a different riff here and there. but the drums? BASIC. yes basic. throw variety into the mix, use your set, use your mind to mix things up a bit.

people see drummers as bafoons with sticks because thats all they hear. listen to death metal- blast beats. pop/indie/emo- rock beats, thrash metal- thrash beats..

jazz. is a very technical form of music. you definatly need to have some imagination to play it, but the drummers are usually assholes who look down and support the theory that anything else is for cavemen. so its not only from the outside people or other members of the band. its your own fellow musicians.

ive just learned to sit there and listen to them bullshit on about drummers being inbred brutes...but to be honest i could care less what they think. Give a bassist a pair of drumsticks n tell him to play necrophaigst or sikth and see how his/her opinion changes.

i also had someone say to me " what would you know your just a drummer" but he was also a shit guitarist. the REAL musicians know how to apreciate drums for what it really takes to be a good one. anyone who says something like that is obviously someone who picked up their instrument to look cool n to not apreciate what its job is in music. bass is also an instrument which isnt given its respect that same guitarist which verbally attacked me also said "bass is just for people who couldnt play guitar", obviously proving that he doesnt have a clue what hes talking about. my band really apreciates what drums is about n actually i get alot of attention when it comes to our shows and our photoshoots (i get a 5 five min solo onstage and i get put to the front of our photoshoots!) so its awesome. also that guy who slagged off bass n drums he later went on to hear the guitarist from my band n gave up playing music completely!!! what a loser!!!

yes its true, we dont get the respect we deserve, but dont let anyone put you down, only you know how hard it is to learn, what you have learned and know theres alot more to learn in the future.

You know in your soul, just is a word , and playing drums is a natural part of my being.

Screw off people that want all the attention, I usally find the lead guitar players want all the attention and if they dont get it, they get upset, and since the crowd is looking at the drummer alot, looks to me like people like the drummer more than most.

I can't say I've heard a lot of slagging about drummers.....I've heard a joke or 2 but (as a female drummer) found these comments generally came from guys who just can't 'hit it.' I've heard one joke (Ironically, repeated by Neil Pert; What do you call a drummer with half a brain?....Ans: Gifted.)
The author of the joke obviously wasn't aware of the mental and physical dexterity it requires to play drums. Really, I've always seen the drummer as an athlete. The dexterity it requires to be a drummer verges on semi or total ambidexterity.(i.e. posesses the ability to use both sides of the brain where a guitar player is more likely to use one side only.).... All the greatest minds of our time have been ambidextrious. (Michael Angelo, Da Vinci etc.) Apparently some small minds are threatened by the combination of talent and a shit load of sexy!

Its funny you bring this up because I was talking with a new aquaintence who plays verry jazzy stuff on guitar. I told him that I see myself as a coordinator. The Guitarist and Bassist and Singer all bring riffs and lyrics to the table and I go,"Why don't we try it like this?"

And all of a sudden we have a song,

I am usually the one who arranges it, or at the very least has an affect on it. Every original song I have ever been a part of has changed because of the way I play drums to it. The riffs change, the lyrics change, everything changes. I am as much a writer as they are and I am VERY LUCKY in that I play with musicians who see that. I get kudos from my bandmates and recognition as a writer of music. If doing that does not bring you the respect it deserves then get away from the people you a re playing with.

I once heard a quote that went something like this:
"The guitarist can have a bad night, the Bassist can have a bad night and the Singer can have a bad night and the band will be alright but if the Drummer has a bad night,. the band will suck."

I dare someone to refut this.

Dude, I absolutely love drummer jokes, for many reasons. Some are funny, some show people's ignorance to what drummers talk about and others are so bad that I laugh at the idiot who repeated a horrible joke.

As far as comments that are made...that's just ignorance, jelousy and/or immaturity.

And if a guitarist won't stop bashing you. Learn the basic full guitar chords. It's not hard and you can have them memorized in a week. Chances are the guy only knows power chords, which makes you a better guitarist than him in just one week, and there's no chance he'll catch up to you on drums in a week.

anyone who makes statements like that simply doesn't have any idea
what they're talking about......complete rubish.
as a drummer, i've always felt that we are the heart and soul of the music...We can give the whole song a complete different emotion by doing what we do. we are a special breed, and just as much of a necessity as a guitar, bass etc.

I agree to a point that drummers don't get any respect.

As a whole drummers don't get any respect but,I've never had a show to where someone hasn't given me an"atta-boy"or say"Dude, that was bad-ass".

I look at it like this:If it wasn't for us"skin-beaters"your band would have NO back bone!Drums are the back-bone of a body, with the other instruments as limbs. If there is no back-bone the body falls down, cannot stand and is a pile of $#(%!.....without a drummer the music is flat!....PERIOD!

I"ll tell anybody:"If you think it's so easy go buy yourself a set, learn all the things you'll never completely learn,set-up/tear-down 300lbs of gear every gig, practice & recording session....buy expensive cymbals,heads,stands,sticks,ect...then get back to me douche'bag".

I do what I love and deal with it....there's always another band around the corner that I can land a gig with.

To hell with the "nay-sayers"!

drummer jokes are just lame. Iv been playing for about 6 years and heard a lot of jokes. I also sometimes get flack from my band mates saying that I struggle to keep time. Then come off stage and have a member of the crowd say '' that was real tight ''. Wheres the logic there?
Then again guitarists in my band play in 'C' to mask there apalling skills lol

Iv read every comment on this thread and i couldnt agree more with the majority of you. We are the back bone we hold it all together we are extremely talented and we are just drummers and we fu**in rock!!!
