8,000 drummers to perform in Autumn Festival

In a bid to create a world record, 8,000 drummers will be brought together to perform at the Autumn Festival here on October 28, Meghalaya Tourism Minister R G Lyngdoh said today.

A representative of the Guinness Book of World Records would be present to witness the programme jointly organised by the State Government and the Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF), an NGO.

The proposed feat is billed to surpass the record of 7,176 drummers at the Phungkek Charity of HongKong in February 2005.

As per the Guinness Book authorities, the drummers would have to perform for at least five minutes in an orchestrated manner.

Lyngdoh said the programme was titled 'Positive Vibrations' and cultural groups from Meghalaya and other northeastern states having drums of their own were invited to participate free of charge provided they attended at least two practice sessions to learn to play a particular tune.

Besides the general public, mostly school students from different educational institutions in and around Shillong will also feature in the event, Lyngdoh, also MTDF Chairman, said.

If the feat of entering the Guinness Book was accomplished, Meghalaya would enter the international tourism map which would boost the state's economy and help bury the differences among different tribes, he added.
