My first set, 1979, I paid 950 with cymbals and cases. They were exactly two years old. I had been playing almost 5 years. Pic was taken the night they came home.

Same set today. Taken in June 07.

I still play Rogers. Also Ayotte Custom. I dont really consider that an upgrade.

I had a terrible Mirage starter kit, second hand faded, sounded shocking. Lugs broke as the tension became too much where the metal had fatigued over time. You know what, for the CD playalong and practice I was doing by myself it did me fine all those years.

I played that for about 7 years before upgrading to A Premier Birch Heritage kit. Now I'm on Starclassic, which i've just bought after 11 years of playing.

I think the time to upgrade is A-when you need to for what you are playing and B-when you can realisticly afford too.

Although it's nice to play a smart kit on your own to cd's, it's a lot cheaper to play a starter kit. When you start recording and gigging a lot and it's worth your while, buy a better kit.

My thoughts anyway.

as an update to my last post, i have nwo been playing over 4 years and finally bought my second kit a couple months ago, a yamaha birch custom absolute nouveau. i have a feeling that i will be playing this kit for a very long time.

i got a kit aftar about a year of lessons, then i had that kit for about 5 years, it was an awesome blue pearl forum , but i decided it was time for a kit of better quality. i got sum custom slipknot pearl kit , which was a bumer cuz im really not a fan , so im still finishing this kit ( ya kno , new skins , different cymbals etc) i think in about 3-4 year id like to get a pearl masters or a reference kit , in purple fade, with an 8" tom and a wooden snare, i really love wood snares , but i hav a metal one now cuz it came with the kit n im stuck with it.

what an essay that turned out to be.

I started out with a cheap ass no name brand set and slowly moved up to a little tiny bit better Peavey Kit. Hopefully I can move up to a Yamaha Rydeen, then to Yamaha Oak Custom.
