I agree that WE NEED TO STICK TOGETHER and not TEAR DOWN. What good is that?? And HATING someone because of their drumming style or technique is VERY IMMATURE!! Take that ENERGY to PRACTICE YOURSELF...to REPLACE the DRUMMERS you HATE SO MUCH!! (If YOU can do such a BETTER JOB THAN DO IT!!!) YOU aren't doing what THEY are DOING (Nor would you want TO??? -I can just hear you say that) BULLSHIT!! You wish you had a record deal or contract or ANYTHING better than playing in your garage or local BARS for peanuts. I know I WOULD! So I don't dislike any drummers out there...they ARE "DOING IT" and NOT TALKING SHIT about it. Matter of FACT I gatta go and BEAT SOME SKINS..You all do the same and GOD BLESS US ALL!! (Cheezy, you might say but I truely wish the BEST for ALL of Us!!) MICKEY B.

i will contribute to this conversation on the grounds that we are reffering to drummers who suck because theyre plauing for wrong reasons or have let the attention go to their heads that sort of thing. one drummer who i really have issues with is that guy from trivium... travis smith is it? i always mix him up with the barker guy from blink anyway. hes way way overated and it really does my head in that little teenage boys will sit there n say he is good because he goes fast or w/e they seem to like in him for. the iriony of it all is im a metal double bass drummer myself but i like to blend ethinic drums into my music also. he has all these endoresements hes on the front of some kind of music magazine everymonth and it drives me insane because hes not that good. has anyone heard their new album and if you have... have you noticed the drum beats are alot less technical? thats because he actually recorded them this time he didnt on the album before which i think is absolutely revolting. just also on a quick note for what someone posted earlier. they said something i like i respect anyone who can get up on stage n play drums...... isnt that what all musicians DREAM of doing? getting on stage and standing infront of that croud n playing your music with your friends should be nothing but pleasurable and if it isnt i suggest you stop. the nerves kick in for me only because i want to put on the best show i possibly can and also the pressure of knowing every other person in the band relies on you not messing up. also there are young people these days who get up on stage thinking theyre the hottest thing around and have been playing for a few months n kill the crowd..... when you meet someone like this you will change your mind about respecting all drummers. it sucks even more when theyre the ones supporting YOUR band and they have just made the entire audience leave n you somehow have to find a way to get the audience back in the stage area. not all musicians deserve our respect most of them become very close minded because its such a personal thing and i think limiting yourself in your own mind makes you a bad or soon to be bad musician. i have some pretty close drummer friends who play completely different genres we cant really be compared, i respect them because they do things on drums i dont n me the same to them n we learn from each other THATS what it should be about but like i said above music is very personal n that on a wider scale will never happen because of close minded people. my rant is over

I agree with all of the fine Ladies and Gentlemen who spoke before about not bashing for bashing sake. We are a Drumming Fraternity.

So addressing bad attitudes: I might be the only one who feels this way.
I love, love his drumming but strictly for attitude ....Mike "I'm God's gift" Portnoy, and his feud with Neil Peart. Portnoy is insanely talented but his off the set actions detract too much for me. He is the T.O. of drums... It is a shame to have all that talent but not an once of common sense. Slow to speak and anger, quick to listen.

I have had the good fortune to meet some of my drum hero's and most were very gracious and nice, but a few of them I later felt betrayed by their attitudes or that I had met them or was foolish enough to like them. Now I try to just like a player for just that ?Playing drums? I do not want to know jack about them now or it might ruin a perfectly good (d)elusion. Man, if I had made the Drumming Dream happen, I would try as best I could to be respectful and accommodating, all within reason, of course.

truely the only drummers that suck are the ones that fail to actually hear what there playing compared to what they think they are playing. But then again there are some people out there that do genuinely not have a rythmic bone in there body. So this is a very open ended question.

I have respect for anyone who picks up sticks! Though I have learned that attitude goes farther than tallent...This was one of the funnest forums I have read!! I like and enjoy a good battle of the witts & the opinions that go with us all! I don't like quite a few drummers only because of thier bad behavier, attitude or disrespect...Everyone that plays the drums is a breed of our own--We all are a weird bunch of ego maniacs that crave attention..I know you are so don't deny it---to need the stage is to need glorification! Without all of us we wouldn't have a beat...I hate to admit it but I even learned something important from Lars---( what not to be as a drummer )...Attitude is everything once you can play pro...If your not liked by the band you won't be called again!
My take on it is play your ass off, never stop learning, have a good attitude & play with the best people you can find! This was fun!!!!
just another drummer who wants to become better, learn more and play more than most..
if you can help please do!!

anyone who says Lars sucks knows nothing about rock drumming. that's a narrow minded opinion in my opinion... Lars has brought a hell of a lot to the table and influenced thousands of us drummers over the years. Metallica's sucsess was no accident. his work on And Justice For All alone put him on the map for me. And about the napster thing, Yes Lars is rich and probably doesn't need the money. but, I believe he didn't do that for himself, he spoke for all of us who want to make a living as a musician. most of the money earned as a musician comes from album sales, not concerts. we all have to make a living even if its being a rock star. Tower records is folding because nobody is buying CD's anymore. what do you think is happening to our income as musicians? So, maybe instead of blasting Lars. you should thank him for standing up for us....Z

Mick fleetwood is highly overated. not saying he sucks, just not that interesting. p.s. why is every1 so nuts about rock drummers, its not about how fast you play, its about groove.

Lars made me start playing drums. He used to play good, but without great sense of time...:(
Best drums he ever did were on Master and justice, where he admited he had had problems with coke.
I you have watched the latest Metallica concerts or that St.Anger rehersal....you know what I mean.....The guy forgot that little he knew, and doesn't practice at all....
It's sad but it talks about Lars as a person not a drummer..
bad drummers: drummers without sense of time or feeling for music
Scew you Lars and your millions

i agree that bashing because you don't like their style or genre is just childish. i respect anybody that tries no matter what level of playing they're on, even if they're one of the lucky ones that made it to the top in a popular band. I saw a kid, maybe 10, in Guitar Center today that was amazing! This kid was pulling off beats and fills that a lot of people don't reach until playing for as long as he's been alive. Some people just have it built into them. For the people that have to struggle, but persevere anyway are the ones that I'll raise my glass to and have the MOST respect for. It's easy to give up. The road less traveled is to keep going despite circumstance. I really don't give 2 shits about how drummers, or musicians in general, act off the stage. It's not like I'm trying to be their friend or anything, even if I get a chance to meet them backstage. It's bound to be a short meeting and that's it. They probably wont remember you 5 seconds after they walk away... So why dislike a drummer that you've loved for years because of an encounter with their personality? They can still play well and can be learned from... That's what matters to me. I'm trying to learn as much as I can and have as much fun as I can.

Agreed,
no one has bashed you or even brought up your name in discussion about it. It is simply a bad topic. It's an argument starter for sure, and it really dosen't prove or disprove any point. But let's face it, we need to stick together, and I'm willing to bet if "The Rev" came knocking on your door and offered you his gig you would take it right? You would be a goof not to! You should read his article in Modern Drummer last month, he's not THAT bad of a guy! I think all drummers deserve to be famous, Cause' we rock!

theres alot of kids around in my area here in il and there always like oh this band sucks and there just in it for the money and there horrible. i dont believe in bad drummers or bad musicians in that matter but alot of the drummers or musicians that are huge that people say there not good or dont know much about music. well there mainstream for a reason and to get to that level of a career in music is very hard. thats just my thoughts about this topic.
