I saw him at a small club in Dallas before their record really started to get recognition. He is totally amazing. He's got finesse like no other. It was funny to watch him set up because the sound engineer ran out of mikes for all the pieces to his kit...he kinda got pissed, but said "f*ck it," and played minus 2 or 3 toms. They hadn't yet released "El Cielo" at the time, but the set consisted of many of those songs. I stood right next to the stage (with plenty of room because no one had heard of them here yet, save a few loyal peeps) and watched the bassist trigger a bunch of sounds barefoot with is big toe on his sequencer. That was such an awesome show. I'm not that old, but I'm beginning to feel senile.

As far as technical playing goes, Virgil Donati, hands down. Amazing control, chops, and feel of the rythm scale. Unbelievable drummer.

there is this dude from Albuquerque, NM, he plays in a band called Tetelestai, he was a really quick hard hitting drummer. He also played with the UNM-marching band and his timing is amazing. I dug the drum roles he was doing. he also uses his cymbols a lot for roles.

Eric Singer. I saw him play with Alice Cooper. He played a clear drum set and set his sticks on fire. Awesome show

hmm, the best I've seen? couldn't narrow it down to one...

dennis chambers (clinic, monster!)

louis bellson (clinic and concert with his big band years ago. smooth smooth smooth, hands of death)

billy cobham (club gig w/ his band, one of the most powerful yet dynamics-laden performances I've ever witnessed)

tony williams (saw the tribute to miles davis tour, JEEZUZ)

rey washam (scratch acid reunion, or any of the multiple times I saw him with ministry, sister run naked, rapeman...one of the most musical rock drummers in history)

gene hoglan (I've seen hiim play with dark angel, death, strapping young lad...just effortless at playing horribly brutal complex materia. the show sunday with dethklok was totally up to par)

dale crover (the heaviest drummer on the planet, I've seen the melvins more times than I can count)

Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting)
Steve Gadd (Paul Simon)
Frank Katz (Brand X)
Glenn Kotche (Wilco)
Neil Peart
Chad Wackerman (clinic, Frank Zappa)
Terry Bozzio (clinic)
Billy Martin (Medeski Martin and Wood)

oh yeah, how could I leave out Bozzio? I saw him do a clinic at guitar center here on that mammoth drumkit. not a clinic in the traditional sense, but more of a chamber music type event where he'd explain what he was doing and take questions in between playing these cool compositions.
