I have many favorites lists, but, as it pertains to rock drums, I would have to say:

The Dillinger Escape Plan(Chris Pennie)
Glassjaw(Larry Gorman/Shannon Larkin/Justin Beck)
The Police(Stewart Copeland)
Refused(David Sanstrom)
Soundgarden(Matt Cameron)
Deftones(Abe Cunningham)
The Blood Brothers(Mark Gajadhar)

I feel that these groups are the best that modern rock drumming has to offer. These drummers are all great musicians. Before I get flamed to death...

Rush is not on this list, because, though Neil Peart has amazing chops, he plays like a robot, with a complete absence of emotion. It is all well and good to be experimental, but saying you like Rush/Neil Peart because of their/his technical ability is like saying you like a painting because of the brand of paint the artist used. The Rush following also churned out a number of techie-pop/rock/metal "supergroups," best known of which is Dream Theater, and these groups have the same premise: 3-5 amazing session players that put out pointless, self gratifying albums that are musical porn for other session-techies and new musicians. Technical ability is important in music, but only as a means to an end. Without musical restraint, subtlety and emotion, technical ability is not art.
