Look at the site I found. It contains information about 61 different kinds of wood and metal(and their sound charactericstics) used in making snare drums. I thought one might consider it helpful :) Here's the link:

I was looking for that. Wanted to post this site. I think the best source for information on snares.
Mapex, Istanbul Agop, Attack, Vater/O4D.

Wow this is really cool. Thanks so much for sharing this. It's a shame only some of the materials presented have an in depth critique, but still, very cool.
