I got these sticks the other day. You know the ones with mallets at one end and regular tips at the other. Just bought them for no reason really.

But when it came down to practice time, I was blown away. The mallet did not make the stick of balance. ( Like I thought it would). And the tone it gives when I hit the toms is deep and full of sound. Like I said I was blown away by the BOOM of floor toms.

Also the way you can use the mallets to build up the cymbals, I'm sure there a term for it but I don't know it added a whole new element to my break downs and fills.

I don't want to sound like a salesman, but I recommend them as a quick way to enhance you sound.

I have the Regal Tip version of that stick/mallet. I used them on a theater gig where I had to go quickly between snare drum and timpani. Not a stick I'd use all the time but for that particular application, they worked very well.

I've never seen these sticks, but from the description I think this is the Vic Firth equivalent: http://www.vicfirth.com/products/gaugersticks.html
