how much does a cymbal's value decrease as it is used? because i want to sell my B8 hi hats to my friend but i wanna come up with a reasonable price for my friend. for a brand new set of sabian B8 hi hats at GC its 100 bucks. im thinking bout selling for bout 30 or 40 bucks. this sound reasonable? or is there some rule of thumb i can use to value my gear?

It depends on how used and in what condition. That sounds like a decent price for a friend, though. :)

depreciating values is all in the eye of the beholder and condition of the cymbal. If the logo's are in perfect condition, no keyholing, scratches etc, who's to say once you clean them they dont look brand new? you sell them close to brand new. I have bought a lot of cymbals in my time (way too many to count) and i will pay full price for perfect logo and finish cymbals. Some vintage cymbals by paiste go for 900-1000 dollars, ridiculous i know, but the beholder is who p ut that value on the cymbal. So 30-40 for the b8s is a great price for a friend or anyone else. im sure you can get more than that elsewhere. But this is where you do it for passing the torch to someone else.

30-40? good call for a friend.

That seems like a good friend price. I had the same problem too, just with pedals. I ended up selling my ic jr double pedal to a friend for 100, instead of the 160 I would have sold it for to anyone else. it was okay tho, I helped a drummer out, I just hope he has as much fun on them as I did.

If you have an Ebay account, you can search completed listings under the advanced search option. That will give you a rough guide as to the current market for many items. There are anomalies, as well.
