I'm looking into a new snare drum. I want something that resembles the old jazz snares of Art Blakey, Paul Humphrey, Max Roach, etc. I want to go Brass or possibly Copper, but I was curious of everyone's thoughts on this.

Can anyone tell me anything about Pearl snare drums, and Brass or Copper in general?

i play the pearl sensitone brass snare. 14x5.5"
it's the best sounding metal snare i've ever played.
Beat on.

If you have the budget, it would be worth checking out the Ludwig Black Beauty and/or their COB series. They are both 5" drums, but damn they sound sweet. Also I have hear a lot of positive feedback about the new Gretsch COB snares as well. The Pearl Sensitone is also a great choice for the money. I own several Pearl snares, and they make some fine drums.

I just had this conversation recently and a friend of mine said his "go-to" was a Yamaha copper snare - he said it was the best of both worlds (wood/metal) and his absolute favorite....and he's got quite a few. I've always loved COB snares myself but I don't have experience with the copper to compare. My friend said the copper was dry and somewhat naturally "eq'd".
