Well I think its the style of music your playing and then your preference from there........im about to start using a 14x8 pork pie 8ply maple i just ordered for my metal band cuza i like the beefy tone of it...........but if i was playing in a death metal band i might want a piccolo........when I play with my rock band I like a brass or bronze snare or sometimes I play with my Yamaha Maple Custom 14x6.5.

that black beauty is a wonderful drum.... gorgeous!

i think you need to have as many different drums in the arsenal as possible. i almost always prefer wood snare drums, the more earthen the better for me... but you have to have a classic 14 x 5ish steel snare drum on hand.... it's just a classic.
