Advice on Tuning Brass Snare Drum

Postby drumweezer » Mon Mar 09, 2009 7:52 pm

Hey guys,

I purchased a couple of months ago a Pork Pie Big Black. I bought it used. The batter head is Remo Ebony Suede with a Remo Ambassador at the bottom. I've tried many types of tunings, but can't really seem to get a tight sound. I also have a horrible snare buzz and have tried detuning the 4 closest lugs, detuning the bottom, tuning the bottom head to a higher pitch, and using duct tape.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

You aren't tensioning the snare side enough. When you press in front of a tension rod with your thumb it should feel almost glass tight, almost like spongy glass. You'll probably want to tension the batter pretty high, too.
