I hated/still hate the 80s rock trend of putting loads of reverb on a snare and having it sound like a cardboard box was recorded in a warehouse. Check GnR Appetite for Destruction, Stryper's In God We Trust, or Bon Jovi's New Jersey if you don't know what I'm talking about. It's that "paaaahhhh" sound that goes on for eight seconds and makes even a single stroke roll sound like a TV with bad reception.

Any triggered snare sounds the worst. Triggering sounds fake, no matter how well it's done, and they wouldn't trigger if they could get a decent snare sound.

Metallica "St. Anger"- let me be the 1,000,001st person to say BLECH.

Not that "ringy" snares are always a bad thing- on Soundgarden's Superunknown CD it sounds fantastic.

And i'm also with everybody who hates that thuddy 80's hair band snare sound.

I'll be the millionth person to say:
Lars' snare sound on St. Anger.
That was just horrendous. EEEK
The album was horrible too, overall. And I'm a die hard Metallica fan. I was very, very disappointed.

Oh yeah, I cannot stand the 80's hair band snare drum sound. Sounds like a thud with load and loads of reverb. No attack, whatsoever.

Worst Metallica Album EVER.

I agree. I couldn't believe it when I heard it. I thought "What's up with the snare sound?" I was really disapointed by it.

Lars Ulrich's snare on Metallica's St. Anger album. Like freakin tin carbage can lids. WTF!.

And the award goes to.... Lars Ulrich for worst recorded snare sound ever. Here to accept his award on behalf of Metallica is James Hetfield because Lars is a woosy. JK Lars I like your drumming on previous records, but that album was stuck in my head and not the songs, the snare drum!

I think I'll do something different.
I hate Jaska's snare sound on Children of Bodom, by Children of Bodom.
Sounds like a sandpaper head.

The 80's reverse reverb, you know it gose "woosh crack" is the worst sounding snar tone in the world. I would take lars' snare over that bullshit.

About lars' snare tone on st. anger, all of you remember that crappy sound right, then he did something alright. He got a crap sound stuck in your head forever and you will never forget it am I right?

Btw I too hate that sound..... Fucking Bob Rock!
