I use 4 mics (as that's all I have currently), straight into a 8 track digital recorder. 1 mic by the bass, 1 above the snare (also picks up some hi hat), 1 above on the left hand side and 1 above on the right hand side. It's not the best but it works. I then transfer the audio into my computer using a USB soundcard (my magic box as I like to call it) and fiddle around with it using CoolEdit Pro 2.1. You can also use something like Audacity which I think is free.

I have recorded drums using only 2 mics before and still got reasonable results. I've not tried recording directly into the computer yet as I can't set up my drums at home at the moment.

Hope some of that info was useful!

I have Sonar Home Studio which is basically Cakewalk in disguise. The only problem I've had with it is that it doesn't like recording real-time, I think it's just too big a piece of software for my computer. However it has a great range of synths which I use regularly with my midi keyboard.
