Can preamps be used alone to record, or is a mixer neccesary?

By pre-amps I'm assuming you mean an Audio Interface

Pre amps do not bring the sound into the computer if thats what you are asking. They are meant to take the mic signal and bring it up to a level that is usable. What you need is an interface to get sound into the computer via firewire or usb.

basically here's the deal

you have:
microphone preamps
OR
a-d converters/sound cards

AND

microphone preamps
+
a-d converters/sound cards

the last type would be something like a presonus firepod.

I have an old discrete (class a) circuit yamaha board as my mic preamps. this feeds into a sound card which is line-level (balanced). setup A as it were.
