How do I mix a session down to a .wav file?

Postby metalhead94 » Thu Jan 15, 2009 9:20 pm

I recorded a song with 4 tracks with REAPER and my crappy laptop mic.

I want to put it on myspace, but I can't figure out how to mix it down to an audio file.

When I go under File then Consolidate/Export Tracks, a box pops up and I just leave all the default settings and hit Process, and from what I under stand, that's supposed to put all the tracks onto one track, but it just stays the same.

Am I doing this right?

Help is MUCH appreciated!

The mixed down track is most likely being saved somewhere on the laptop. Open up the search feature under the Start Menu and search for the song title. More likely than not it's somewhere in program files\reaper.

so your 4-track is giving you 4 individual files? what are these file types? Probably .wav's themselves, right?

and reaper converts them from 4-to-1? what are these "default" settings?

I'm guessing that you can set your own "working file" locations so you can say exactly where you want files you are working with and saving are being held.

Some screen caps would help a lot to give us a better idea, too. "print screen" and upload the image to a host if you don't have a desktop image capture program.

I use Adobe Audition to merge tracks (amongst other things). PM me if you want to try it out, I can point you in the right direction.

Well I had the option to tell ir where to put it, so I put in my band's folder under Music. The file name is Hamster In My Pants ferizzle, and it just added another one called Hamster In My Pants ferizzle-consolidated. And when I opened that it was still 4 tracks.

Maybe it's time to bust out the instruction manual? :?

some videos

http://www.reaper.fm/~pipeline/REAPERVideos/basics/

and found this.....

Q: Quick mix 2 tracks into 1. I'm not seeing any of that stuff in Reaper.

A:It's there. Granted, lots of things in Reaper are just not that obvious. To do a quick mix of two tracks into one file, solo the two tracks and render a mix of the two (current range or whole file). It will (can) import that back into the project on a new track. If you just want to silence a part, hover the mouse and hit S to split the part away and mute or delete the part.

The two soloed tracks in this graphic will be mixed - only the time range (loop range "render time selection") - and it will be imported back into the project.

I'm guessing just substitute where he says "two" with "four" and your tracks will end up as one. Again, I don't know, I use Adobe products.

Ugh. When I tried to upload it to myspace, it said the file size was too large. Is there anyway to resize it?

get a program called ASHAMPOO MUSIC STUDIO

Image

That image is from the main screen when you load it, you'll want "MODIFY FILE". Here you can compress your audio in any number of ways as well as convert it to a different format (ie one that isn't such a hog).

Use the free trial key and see if it does the trick. Shoot me a PM if you like it and want a copy of the program.

does Reaper allow you to export it as an mp3 instead of a wav file??

it would be easier rather than having to convert the wav

I suggested that too, but didn't hear back from him until this afternoon. He was missing the lame encoder to do it. Sent him the file and waiting to hear back from him to see how it turned out.

It looks like it must have worked. He is my friend on myspace and he uploaded the song earlier today
