it's been a long time... none of you probably remember me but i still see some of the old characters around. dose, howepirate, zen drummer etc.

anyway my band is heading on tour pretty soon and all the bands will be sharing a backline kit which has two bass drums. i've been planning to switch over to two drums for a while now and i'm still looking for another black-on-black pearl export kick for cheap, but i play with an Iron Cobra Power Glide double pedal and i'm trying to decide what to do about my pedal rig. i love my ICs and would be happy with two single pedals, but i'd also really appreciate having the versatility of being able to take only one kick drum to practice and i'd rather not own three pedals just for that. i've heard that Axis and Trick can be easily switched between double and single, and i've been slavering over the classic black longboards for years, but how simple is it actually, and are there any other options?

on the other hand, people have told me that the feel of two singles is a lot different from a double and that i should probably practice with two all the time instead of switching between them... anybody have any input on this?

Two singles are only different then a double pedal because most low-end pedals don't have a consistent response between the two pedals Geometrically, unless your pedals are parallel the slave shaft has to rotate more to make the beater travel the same distance as the master pedal (same reason you can't run a spool rear end in your car if you plan on driving more then a 1/4 mile at a time). It's a marginal difference and most intermediate and high-end pedals have enough adjustments to compensate.
You can convert some pedals, but that's not something you want to deal with everyday on the road. What I would suggest-You can leave the kit set up with two drums and just hook up your double pedal to one bass drum, you don't have to worry about having three pedals, tuning, unbalanced mics, spending any money, re-learning on different pedals, etc. and everyone else can do there thing without breaking down.

Excellent response E.D.!
On the other side of the spectrum, if ya wanna spend the cash buy Trick. They literally switch in seconds. The Axis take several minutes(more like 10-20), and the screws and hardware are far less durable.
On a shoe string budget, go with what Emp said.

Really helpful comments guys, I appreciate it. I've actually played on his kit with my double pedals before but the issue is that he has a rack and his kit is set up kind of cramped to fit the double in. I may just rent two singles for the month or so that we're touring and call it a band expense for that reason.

Thanks a lot!

Haha, thanks. I changed from just Bong to Brother_Bong after the first Drum Road Trip. I think Zen started calling me that during the event because it felt like a fraternity or something. After that it just stuck.
As far as the Mod thing, even though we have lost 2 this year, I think Stump and Timekeep still do a fine job without needing my help. But thanks again.
Oh, and my kit was renamed Bongosaurus Rex.

Dude, why'd you have to mention E.D.? You know it's an embarrassing topic for self-conscious men. I aleardy talked to my doctor about Levitra!

As long as there's nothing blocking the slave shaft you should be able to adjust it so the pedals sit where the singles would go, they'd just be connected. If not, having spare pedals and parts on the road is never a bad idea.
Either way, good luck!
