I want to tune my heads somewhat low without losing all resonance and not having that plastic-y sound every time I hit it. Right now I'm using EC2's tuned low. They sound really dead and plastic-y and they go out of tune just from playing them. I was thinking Remo Pinstripes. Do they keep resonance when tuned low? If not, what's a good head? Another question...Do coated toms sound good when tuned low?

And you still get a decent amount of resonance out of them?

What size drums are you using? You might need larger drums for the tones you're trying to get.

Factory heads. My 14 inch floor tom is the only one that sounds decent.

Small drums only tune so low. You probably will need bigger drums for the sound you want. Maybe adding a 16" will do the trick. Though an 18" floor tom really sounds like what you want.

get new resonant heads. something that compliments your EC2s. good resonant heads are the key to a full, resonant sound.
but you can only go so low with those tom sizes. mine are the same.
Beat on.

I must agree. A 14" drum can only go so low. Mine has a nice low sweet spot but it isn't thunderous. I have G2 Coateds on my 18" floor and I've found that to be a good combo for a floor tom.

Might I up the ante and say Ebony Pinstripes? That's actually what's on my floor tom. Though I will replace it with a hydraulic over J1 combo as soon as I can as the heads are old.

I like the Aquarian Response 2 over Pinstripes. Even deeper are the Performance II heads. Those are like Evans Hydraulics with tone.

If I was searching for super low with resonance, I'd want a 24"x16" kick, 12"x10" and 14"x12" rack toms, 16"x16" and 18"x16" floor toms, and a 14"x6" birch snare.

slightly off topic
Does "Ebony-izing" a drum head affect the sound?
I have heard one person say it makes it darker but have not heard any other opinions
Remo doesn't explain it either
You say irritant, I say catalyst
