i got news for you, the artists that people have mentioned here are far more important to jazz music than steve harvey singing on his sitcom, lets compare it to the size of the universe being compared to a speck of dust in your house. do you have i tunes? if so go to the itunes store and type some of the names people have typed here in and listen to 30 second samples. you will get an idea of what good jazz is that way. also time should have little to do with what kind of jazz music you should be looking at and if anything older jazz should be heard first.

everything mentioned here and I will also add

Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
anything by Charles Mingus
Miles Davis - Live at the Plugged Nickel
Live Evil
At Fillmore
Ornette Coleman - Ornette!
Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch!
John Scofield - Loud Jazz
Sonny Sharrock - Ask the Ages

+ so much more. The John Mclaughlin trio with Dennis Chambers and that badman organ player was incredible. They had a live album that I can't remember the name of.
