Rhytm is a way to transmit a description of experience
in an emotional and not abstract way.
It is more than a metaphor:
It is a physical experience as real as any other.

Well I'll tell you!

I'd like to hear a genre of music that pisses me off to no end. I can listen to any :...STYLE....: under the sun, but there are a lot of bad bands with bad songs.

Currently listening to: Ted Nugent - Hey Baby!

To me, it's like, I check the roots of the band, see where they came from, so i can appreciate it more, like take Necrophagist for example, heavist bastards i have seen in a long time, and they base their style off jazz, if you listen closely you can hear it =)

Post Wed Dec 13, 2006 12:57 am I read a while back about a guy talking about the Dimmu Borgir drummer. First off, he was booted from the band about 6 months ago and is now replaced by the ex-drummer of Mayhem: Hellhammer.

And he is a rather large man, but his playing isnt just brutal like alot of death metal bands would like. He throws in his jazz background, which can be heard with his intricate hi-hat and ride work. His fills are also amazing planned.

I know that it's aggressive. I listen to a lot of metal music. It's just that life is not all about aggression, is it? :)

you obviously dont listen to metal so dont comment on it.

also with an uneducated but ignorant oppinion like that i would say your a jazz drummer

It freaks me out how I can listen to this band's music over and over and get a new experience from it every time: Wired All Wrong. I don't know what genre they are -- can anyone tell me?

And then there's Quantic... amazing amazing amazing. It freaks me out that someone can compose that way.

I can understand why people "dont get it" or understand the music when it comes to UG metal, its simply not the peoples choice or any kind of mass-appeal music, though...

I think the principal of "It all sounds the same" when speaking of Underground metal genres or any "genre" in general is a cop-out and primarily an ignorant state of mind. You can say such about any "genre" of music that you dont listen to; think of how many times you've heard ohh jazz is all the same, though Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis are well apart. classical... Henryk Górecki, a whole different ballgame to Wagner, rock, fusion, pop... all of it.

Genre is essentially a common ground or unwritten law behind the kind of music played so of course there is and are common factors but its no different than any genre of music, including the style YOU dedicate yourself to.

Im an extreme metal drummer primarily though as a music lover I never denounce any music as I believe there is something to gain from all music, I sit there playing jazz for myself to get off on that "feeling the drum" kinda thing aswell as playing some good stompin' old school rock and then the frantic blasting of black metal.
am I a violent person? possibly, its part of being a human, all the time? nope... the music is a form of expression, a vent, yeah I may have extreme or anti-social ideals or views i.e. I believe christianity and all piety is the bane of humanity, in my eyes it is a state of mind that is holding humanity back from the next step in human evolution but its not a view i expect anyone else to follow, those like minded in this or any view will find a sense of solace in expressing this as every sentient being does, now look at the polar, christian rock... same situation, all part of our great human nature, none are exempt from this! and genre's of music are an expressed facet of this sense of "humanity" (getting off track)...

anyways if you don't understand why or how people may be driven towards this facet of human psyche than its simply not for you, you could no doubt be the polar human to what makes metalfolk what they are, but that difference and choice is what makes humanity "sentient" isnt it?!

Simply put... to each their own.

Though the rant was long it wasnt created out of me taking offence, I merely felt it necessary to put my mind across in this topic, and then it just kept coming... hahah

removed after paragraph 2;
Then you can also be reeeeaaaal creative smoke tonnes of pot and focus on these experimental "progressive" styles but then... almost all are destined to fail due to the fact that the whole "pot makes you more creative" attitude is WRONG and it in truth comes down to the fact that stupid ass shit sounds really f@^cking cool when you have all that smoke between your ears... (american grind-core and brutal-death also come to mind when I speak of that..)

Meshuggah are one of my all time favorite bands....ecspecially their first releases, great use of polyrythmic time structures and unique guitar work. Anyway, I dont think there is a genre that 'scares' me but I definately do not like country, rap, hip hop, R&B and pop.

I was always fascinated by the Progressive Rock band, Gentle Giant, the forefathers of the UK Prog-Rock in the 1970's. Their music STILL stands out today. Many 70's Progressive bands were influenced by their mix of Medieval, Classical and ModernJazz/Rock. Think what they might have done with multi-timbral synths and ProTools!

I think he's simply saying he doesn't get it, not that metal drummers are somehow inferior because they do get it. And labeling someone as uneducated and ignorant just because they don't share your views on music is pretty closed-minded, not to mention redundant.
