Why stop with the 40 essential rudiments. Once you master most of the 40, move on to learn what is called "hybrid" rudiments there are a bunch of them to practice. For those of you who do not have any idea what a hybrid rudiment is, it is taking one rudiment and mixing in with another. For example- take flam accents and some simple tap drags mixx them together and you get flam drags, add a diddle on top of the accents of a flam accent and you get cheeses. Those two hybrids are probably the most common you will come across, more advanced ones such as inverted flam taps with cheeses are very hard to master but once you do they are amazing. other fun hybrid patterns are Shurley Murpheys- RllrrrLrrlll another variant of the shurley is the egg beater- RRRLLRRRLLR. Throw some flams in some parradiddles and you got what some call choo choos. flam the low notes of the diddles. there are so many possible cominations of rudiments that can be mixed together to create new hybrids. so get out theer and get creative and invent some new rudiments. Apply these to drumset and you will have some amazing and original beats.

P.S. if you really wanna get good at rudiments join a drum corps drumline or an indoor drumline. you get some serious chops doin that.
